Dotcom: US officials among biggest Mega users

Internet tycoon Kim Dotcom has claimed US officials were a few of the biggest users of his Megaupload website before it was shut down for alleged copyright infringement.

Dotcom, who founded Megaupload, is on bail at his Coatesville mansion earlier than a hearing to come to a decision whether he'll be extradited to the usa to stand charges.

The 38-year-old and his associates, Mathias Ortmann, Bran van der Kolk and Finn Batato, are accused of breaching international copyright laws to the worth of US$500 million.

Megaupload was shut down in January, soon after the four were arrested.

Website TorrentFreak reports Dotcom is taking legal action in an try and "reunite" former Megaupload users with data they download from the location.

His investigations uncovered many US Government officials who held Megaupload accounts, it said.

"Guess what - we found a large amount of Mega accounts from US Government officials including the dept of Justice and the united states Senate."

"i am hoping we shall soon have permission to provide them and the remainder of our users access to their files," Dotcom told the web site.

A lot of people complained of losing legitimate personal files after Megaupload was shut down in January.

Dotcom told TorrentFreak he was negotiating with america Department of Justice to permit those users to retrieve their lost files.

"Megaupload's legal team is operating hard to reunite our users with their data."

US prosecutors allege Dotcom and his associates used Megaupload to hold out a "mega conspiracy".

They face charges of conspiring to commit racketeering, conspiring to commit money-laundering, copyright infringement and aiding and abetting copyright infringement.

A date for the extradition hearing was set down in August.
