RIM expands enterprise server to permit Android and Apple devices to glue

RIM has announced the launch of an enterprise mobile device management solution which may allow BlackBerry, Android and iOS smartphones and tablets to connect with a network.

Named the BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, it'll simplify the management of smartphones and tablets running BlackBerry, Android and Apple operating systems. Currently in early beta testing with select enterprise customers, RIM said that this is now accepting customer nominations for the closed beta programme, so one can start in January with general availability expected in late March.

According to the corporate, BlackBerry Mobile Fusion brings together version 5.0.3 of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for BlackBerry smartphones and gives management capabilities for BlackBerry PlayBook tablets built at the technology of the Enterprise Server.

These will include asset management, configuration management, security and policy definition and management, remote locking and wiping for lost devices and alertness and software management. These features also are offered for smartphones and tablets running Android and iOS operating systems.

Advanced features for BlackBerry smartphones will include BlackBerry Balance technology to support using a single device for both work and private purposes without compromising the organisation's should secure, manage and control confidential information; and greater than 500 IT policies and over-the-air app and software installation and management.

RIM also claimed that BlackBerry Mobile Fusion will introduce self-service functionality for workers to secure lost or stolen BlackBerry smartphones and PlayBook tablets.

Alan Panezic, vice-president, enterprise product management and marketing, at RIM, said: “Mobile Fusion brings together our industry-leading Enterprise Server technology for BlackBerry devices with mobile device management capabilities for iOS and Android devices, all managed from one web-based console.

“It provides the mandatory management capabilities to permit IT departments to confidently oversee using both company-owned and employee-owned mobile devices within their organisations.”
